Damage by herbivores can induce various defensive responses. Induced resistance comprises traits that can reduced the damage, while compensatory responses reduce the negative effects of damage on plant fitness. Timing of damage may be essential in determining the patterns of induced defenses. Here, we tested how timing and frequency of leaf damage affect compensatory responses in wild lima bean plants in terms of growth and seed output, as well as their effects on induced resistance to seed beetles. To this end, we applied mechanical damage to plants at different ontogenetical stages, at one time point (juvenile stage only) or two time points (seedling and juvenile stage or juvenile and reproductive stage). We found that plants damaged at the seedling/juvenile stage showed higher compensatory growth, and seed output compared to plants damaged only at the juvenile stage or juvenile/reproductive stage. Seeds from plants damaged at the juvenile and juvenile/reproductive stages had fewer beetles than seeds from undamaged plants, however this was driven by a density dependent effect of seed abundance rather than a direct effect of damage treatments. We did not find differences in parasitism rate by parasitoid wasps on seed beetles among plant treatments. Our results show that damage at the seedling stage triggers compensatory responses which implies that tolerance to herbivory is enhanced or primed by early damage. Herbivory often occurs at several time points throughout plant development and this study illustrates that, for a full understanding of the factors associated with plant induced responses in a dynamic biotic environment, it is important to determine the multitrophic consequences of damage at more than one ontogenetical stage.

Objetivo: Analizar el COVID-19 desde experiencias con animales domésticos y otras especies. Método: Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica documental con la finalidad de analizar documentos referentes al tema de investigación. Resultados: Se seleccionaron 15 artículos con relación al objetivo propuesto. Conclusión: La investigación del transcurso de la enfermedad en animales no es un asunto que deba ser tomado a la ligera o ignorado, la información que se obtenga de estas investigaciones ayudará epidemiológicamente a crear planes de prevención y contingencia, además en estudio en modelos animales ayudará al mejor entendimiento de la enfermedad. Si animales como los visones, que abundan en países como los Estados Unidos, se convierten en un reservorio del SARS-CoV-2 que puedan propagar la enfermedad con mayor velocidad, será muy difícil de controlar, incluso con vacunas debido a que en algunos casos se presentan mutaciones


Objective: To analyze COVID-19 from experiences with domestic animals and other species. Method: A documentary bibliographic review was carried out in order to analyze documents related to the research topic. Results: 15 articles were selected in relation to the proposed objective. Conclusion: The investigation of the course of the disease in animals is not a matter to be taken lightly or ignored, the information obtained from these investigations will help epidemiologically to create prevention and contingency plans, in addition, the study in animal models will help to better understand the disease. If animals such as mink, which are abundant in countries such as the United States, become a reservoir of SARS-CoV-2 that can spread the disease with greater speed, it will be very difficult to control, even with vaccines because in some cases mutations are present.

La diarrea del viajero (DV) es la complejidad más común y su repercusión varía en función de muchas variables: edad, lugar de destino, estación del año, tipo de residencia, origen del viajero y, por supuesto, la dieta durante el viaje, en definición es la emisión de heces sueltas tres o más veces al día, se adquiere mayormente al consumir alimentos y bebidas contaminados con patógenos que ocasionen diarrea. A nivel mundial, las causas más comunes de DV son dos patotipos de Escherichia coli (enterotoxigénica y enteroagregativa) y Campylobacter, aunque existen variaciones significativas según el área geográfica visitada. Algunos autores han detectado la presencia de diarrea en más de la mitad de los viajeros a países en vías de desarrollo. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal en 15 hospitales centinelas de la zona 9 del Sistema de Vigilancia de la resistencia antimicrobiana, en la provincia de Pichincha Quito, Ecuador entre enero 2019 a enero 2020, con el objeto de caracterizar los eventos de DV. 517 registros, solo en 298 se asento la procedencia, pudiendo atribuirse a ese 42,34% la procedencia por nacionalidad, se estimó que 108 casos presentaron infección mixta de al menos una bacteria y otro tipo de agresor, lo que representa 36,24%, siendo el agente causal principalmente involucrado ETEC, seguida de E. coli H7:O157 (N=60)(AU)

A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in 15 sentinel hospitals in zone 9 of the Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System, in the province of Pichincha Quito, Ecuador between January 2019 and January 2020, in order to characterize VD events. 517 records, only in 298 the origin was established, and that 42.34% can be attributed the origin by nationality, it was estimated that 108 cases presented mixed infection of at least one bacterium and another type of aggressor, which represents 36.24% , the causative agent being mainly involved ETEC, followed by E. coli H7: O157 (N = 60). Likewise, ETEC is responsible for the greatest severity in clinical pictures, being responsible for 50.00% of the cases in this category(AU)
